Owner, The Colony Meadery
An accomplished home brewer, Michael brewed his first batch of beer in 2001 and the hobby took hold. He decided to dabble into mead making by following the recipe published by The American Homebrewers Association for Mead Day 2009. That batch of mead went on to win several awards at various competitions and eventually s pawned the recipe that became the 2011 Valhalla mead competition best-of-show winning recipe. That best-of-show award led to a successful collaboration batch made with Moonlight Meadery in New Hampshire which is now a regular recipe in their mead line up. The collaboration provided Michael a look into how a successful, commercial meadery operates and planted the seed that eventually lead to The Colony Meadery.
Since opening The Colony Meadery with his business partner, Michael has created dozens of new mead recipes, ranging from low alcohol and carbonated session meads to strong and sweet dessert meads. The diversity of the mead lineup has been successful due to the delicate balance each mead exhibits. This balance is achieved by carefully crafting the recipe so no single characteristic of the mead plays an overly prominent role in the overall experience of the beverage. This balance has become the signature characteristic of all meads produced by The Colony Meadery.
